How It All Began - Part 2

If you've read the first entry about my journey into photography, this entry continues that journey. A photograph I took at sunset after sailing on the bay spurred my interest in this medium.

It was two years later that I entered a technical program in photography in Providence, RI. The school no longer exists, but many of the memories during those two fleeting years linger on.

There was no Photoshop then, so it would stand to reason there were no home computers either. We used what is known as large format cameras; the cameras that looked like accordions. The bulk of our work at school, in the studios, was either commercial photos or portraits, which would ultimately prepare us for work in the real world. Our outside assignments or "fun shoots" were taken with 35mm SLR cameras or 2 1/4" cameras, both referred to the size film the cameras used.

It was a small group, those of us enrolled in the program, but we had so much fun. Someone always had a camera and was always taking your's or someone else's picture.

We learned about lighting, retouching, posing subjects, and so much more. I felt like I had found my niche.

Then, graduation, finding work and putting our knowledge into action. More on this at a future date.
