When You Want to But You Can't
For a number of months, my ability to photograph has been shelved. A very frustrating situation to say the least. Physical constraints prohibit me from doing, well, a lot. All kinds of ideas roll through my head, landing aimlessly somewhere in my brain. Projects I've started and would like to continue are left on hold. Projects I've yet to start roam willy-nilly in my head. A frustrating situation for me. But since I am not able to execute these ideas, all is not lost. There is still Photoshop.
As somewhat of a purist, I told myslef I'd never resort to using Photoshop to considerably alter my images. However, under the circumstances, I have fallen prey to the excitement and newness of what Photoshop can do. After a few years of telling myself "not me", I finally broke down and purchased Photoshop CS5 late last year. It is a daunting program, to say the least, and there is so much with which to become acquainted. At this point, I think a basic lesson is in order.
In April, I did just that. I contacted Brittany at one of the labs that prints my images and she patiently walked me through some of the things I wanted to learn. It went by so quickly and I feel like I've barely skimmed the surface of this editing giant. But, it's given me a place to start. And on the days when I want to photograph but I can't, I sit down at my computer and practice the new techniques I've learned. And at times, I explore the menu selections I've not yet chosen, which sometimes yield something wonderful and other times not. But for now, the excitement of a new image resides in my computer rather than my camera.
