In light of the political issues since 2016 and even more recent, I want to voice my opinion on a virtue that is sorely losing ground: Respect.
It seems to be becoming antiquated in every aspect of American life.
Let's face it. We all have our opinion about anything and everything this life has to offer. How can we not? We are all born into very different families, all with different experiences, different biases, different economic backgrounds, and the list goes on. Yet we take offense when someone disagrees with our religion, our views, our opinions, our political views. Those who don't agree are considered intolerant, bigots, and any number of other names that suit our mindset. People are needlessly and aggressively attacked.
Respect (definition): "Due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others."
So where has it gone? Do we even know what it is anymore? Has decency and civility that accompany it been trampled for good?
I believe that to make any relationship work requires time, sacrifice and compromise. Yet so much of what I see, particularly in the political arena over the last three years, has been childish, selfish, egotistical and a whole lot more. And America takes its lead from the top. Who doesn't? Everything trickles from the top down.
And as people we have a "herd" instinct: follow the crowd.
Respect (definition): "Due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others."
We will never all agree on everything. It is not possible on this earth. Let's choose trying to understand one another rather than demanding those of a difference of opinion be berated, sued, disrespected. It can only do a world of good.
