The anticipation of seeing an amaryllis bloom is, for me, beyond words. Because of the care that goes into producing a flower for the next season, it is an event that I look forward to, about as much as a child waiting to see what gifts Santa has left under the tree. First the emersion of a bud peeks from the bulb (if I'm lucky). As it emerges, it's stalk rises over a foot from its bulbous womb, the bud, at the top. When the stalk's growth is completed, the buds start to separate. There can be two, three, or four flowers wrapped tightly in that small bud. The excitement is watching to see just how many will appear. And their entrance is nothing less than glorious as they separate and begin to open. Truly something to behold.
